Clinical Family System Supervision Groups

Clinical Family Systems Supervision Groups

Clinical supervision groups at the Family Systems Institute aim to integrate family systems theory in clinical practice, with a particular focus on the therapist’s own work on differentiation of self in practice. FSI Supervisors are accredited with the Australian Association of Family Therapy (AAFT) and from either social work or psychology disciplines. Clinical supervision groups are run online, and, with the exception of the advanced group, require no prior training in Bowen Family Systems Theory.

Choose from groups that form part of the FSI’s family systems training programs*, or based on your specialised interest area:

  • Family Systems in Clinical Practice Supervision Group*
  • Advanced Family Systems Clinical Supervision Group*
  • Holding Systems Thinking in Post-Separation Cases – Clinical Supervision Group
  • Thinking Systems in School Settings – Clinical Supervision Group
  • Working with Couples – Clinical Supervision Group

Family Systems in Clinical Practice Supervision Group

– 5 x 2-hour online sessions
– $650+GST
*Program requirement for the Advanced Certificate in Couple and Family Systems Therapy*

This group is ideal for those interested in learning about family systems theory in application to clinical cases. It helps participants to integrate new knowledge about Bowen Theory in an environment of collaborative learning and reflection. Drawing on their thinking about family systems from the guided reading material provided, participants are asked to formulate hypotheses and present their thinking about clinical cases using family systems theory’s concepts. A key aspect of the clinical supervision program is clinicians increasingly reflecting on the self of the therapist, noticing their triggers and sensitivities to clients and where they are vulnerable to losing objectivity (taking sides).

Conditions of registration for this group:
– Currently working in a clinical / therapeutic context
– Commitment to all sessions with good access to internet for online participation
– Participants will get the most out of this group if they have some prior engagement with Bowen Theory – Join an FSI Introduction to Bowen Theory group or read more about the concepts here.

Advanced Family Systems Clinical Supervision Group

– 5 x 2.5-hour online sessions
– $780+GST
*Program requirement for the Advanced Certificate in Couple and Family Systems Therapy*

This group helps participants integrate their thinking about family systems theory with application to cases through live supervision with participants presenting audio / video examples of their clinical sessions for reflection and discussion. Live supervision provides the opportunity to further grow in awareness of self as a therapist, and to reflect on the application of theory in practice. Pre-reading for each session continues to provide a strong theoretical foundation for this supervision group.

Conditions of registration for this group:
– Completion of Family Systems in Clinical Practice Supervision Group (see above)
– Currently working in a clinical / therapeutic context
– Commitment to all sessions with good access to internet for online participation
– Commitment to bring live (audio/video) recordings of sessions for supervision purposes.

Holding Systems Thinking in Post-Separation Cases – Clinical Supervision Group

– 5 x 2-hour online sessions
– $680+GST

How does thinking about family systems help in the complex field of post-separation? This group aims to help participants think about how having a theory about human relationships and how they function can help when tensions are high and emotionality in the system is intense. Using reading material and case examples brought to supervision, supervisors will guide participants in thinking about how to navigate the relationship pressures in the room with clients in the post-separation space, as well as the pressures in the broader system when multiple services and courts are involved. This group is ideal for practitioners working with post-separation families, as well as those who are interested in equipping themselves for this work.

Conditions of registration for this group:
– Currently working in a relevant clinical / therapeutic context
– Commitment to all sessions with good access to internet for online participation

Thinking Systems in School Settings – Clinical Supervision Group

– 5 x 2-hour online sessions
– $680+GST

Schools are multifaceted systems, with students, families, school counsellors, school leaders and education services interlocking with one another. Family systems theory provides a way for helping professionals to navigate the complexity in a school system, by learning to observe the triangles in the school system and working to get clearer about their own part in it. Using reading material and case examples brought to supervision, supervisors will guide participants in thinking about how to navigate relationship pressures when anxiety is high, in thinking about their own responsibility when working with students, parents and relating to staff within the organisation. This group is ideal for school counsellors and those in student wellbeing roles in school.

Conditions of registration for this group:
– Currently working in a relevant clinical / therapeutic context
– Commitment to all sessions with good access to internet for online participation

Working with Couples – Clinical Supervision Group

– 5 x 2-hour online sessions
– $680+GST

Learn about a family systems approach to working with couples through the clinical application of Bowen Theory in this supervision group. This group integrates key principles of family systems theory – including fusion, differentiation of self, and triangles – with clinical practice. Couple cases brought to supervision are presented and explored with a family systems lens as a way of thinking about the emotional process in relationships and the role of the therapist when working with couples. Guided reading provides the opportunity to grapple with family systems theory ideas and bring relevant questions for discussion with the supervision group. Ideal for practitioners working with couples in counselling settings, and for those interested in gaining more insight into couple dilemmas.

Conditions of registration for this group:
– Currently working in a relevant clinical / therapeutic context
– Commitment to all sessions with good access to internet for online participation
