Family Systems Clinical Case Seminar
Working with an individual with complex family of origin relationships

Dr Anne McKnight
Dr. Anne S. McKnight, Director
The Bowen Center for the Study of the Family
The concept of cutoff, one concept in Murray Bowen’s family systems theory, is unique in the field of mental health. Cutoff describes distancing from or severing ties with important family relationships as a way to manage tension. He viewed bridging cutoff and developing a wide range of person-to-person relationships in the family as one of the best opportunities to address the immaturity that impedes one’s capacity to develop autonomy as an adult. Important to keep in mind, however, is that an individual pays a price for cutting off from family members and cutoff is often a last resort to prevent from feeling overwhelmed. From the individual’s point of view, cutoff is a way to preserve his or her identity. A case will be presented in which the decision to cut off from family members is a stepping stone to more thoughtful functioning. It will be interesting to explore is whether this individual will be able to again relate to her family as she continues her efforts.
There will be opportunity for participants to discuss and ask questions.
