3 - Nuclear Family Emotional System

In positing the 'nuclear family emotional system', Bowen focuses on the impact of 'undifferentiation' on the emotional functioning of a single generation family.
He asserts that relationship fusion, which leads to triangling, is the fuel for symptom formation which is manifested in one of three categories.  These are:
  1. couple conflict;
  2. illness in a spouse;
  3. projection of a problem onto one or more children.
Each of these is expanded in the following pages.
